Fantastic Beast 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald released its first trailer this week. The film hasn't been without controversy, but the fight over the trailer came from a pretty unexpected place.

— Fantastic Beasts (@FantasticBeasts) March 13, 2018People are for sure extremely excited, especially to see more familiar ground, like Hogwarts.
One user writes, "I SEE MY HOME."

— Mai (@maipaperjourney) March 13, 2018But there is one detail they're focusing on that's not so great.
"Looks great — just... can you not show people apparating on Hogwarts grounds?" asked one Tweeter. "Like, it's very clear in the book that you can't, no one can, NOT EVEN DUMBLEDORE. They messed with that in the original series and they're doing it again. It really bothers me!"

— Sara Mueller (@biblio_saurus) March 13, 2018Yes, you can see wizards apparating into Hogwarts in this trailer, which is very expressly forbidden in the books. You have to take a horse or car or your own two feet. You can't just pop by.
And people are genuinely pretty upset about it.
"DID THEY JUST APPARATE INTO HOGWARTS?" demanded one user. Another quotes Hermione: "You can't apparate inside the Hogwarts grounds, how often do I have to tell you?"
DID THEY JUST APPARATE IN TO HOGWARTS? #FantasticBeasts pic.twitter.com/FCuOs3cEKE

— The Leaky Cauldron (@leaky) March 13, 2018CURRENTLY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOWWW THEY ARE ABLE TO APPARATE ON HOGWARTS GROUNDS WOZZDISS???!! #FantasticBeasts pic.twitter.com/bJUvHpEFUp
— • 희망 • (@_amaljiliow) March 13, 2018Also WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK YOU CANNOT APPARATE ONTO HOGWARTS GROUNDS YOU EVIL LITTLE COCKROACHES #FantasticBeasts
— emotional wreck™️ (@ddlywckmorm) March 13, 2018Honestly, David Yates, if you would only read Hogwarts: A History, you would know that you can't apparate onto school grounds... pic.twitter.com/xcJ3yHzi78
— Benjamin Light (@benjamin_light) March 13, 2018You👏Can't👏Apparate👏Within👏The👏Grounds👏Of👏Hogwarts👏
— Mallory Hayes (@MalloryAHayes) March 13, 2018This has led to some passionate arguments:
Potterhead fangasm:
OMG A NEW MOVIE STARRING MY FAVORITE HUFFLEPUFF MAGIZOOLOGIST ABOUT ALBUS’S DEFEAT OF GRINDELWALD IN 1945!!!
Potterhead nitpicker:
GOSH DARN IT, YOU CAN’T APPARATE INSIDE OF HOGWARTS GROUNDS!! https://t.co/WSAZ1b712x
This isn’t nitpicking. The inability to apparate within hogwarts is an important plot device in nearly every book!
— Kyleen Breslin (@kbreslin624) March 13, 2018There are also a lot of people trying to come up for reasons why you would be able to apparate into Hogwarts during the time period of this film, which is several decades before the events of Harry Potter's time.
"OK Potter fans, I know some of you are Mad Online," begins one person. "But what if events in this movie ARE the reason you can't apparate onto the Hogwarts ground HMMM?"
Okay Potter fans I know some of you are Mad Online™ but what if events in this movie ARE the reason you can't Apparate onto the Hogwarts grounds HMMM
— Proma (@promawhatup) March 13, 2018Has it always been a rule one cannot apparate within Hogwarts grounds? Maybe we find out why the rule exists. But you could also be right that it wasn’t really on the grounds. I think the former. It was put in the trailer for a reason.
— Amanda Blanchard (@weblore1) March 13, 2018It’s possible that the no apparition rule was not implemented until after this story takes place and before Harry got to Hogwarts 😝
— Chris Davis (@Jcld1029) March 13, 2018Is the bridge technically even Hogwarts grounds? Also they probably implemented that rule after all the shit Grindelwald did
— Anthony 🎭 (@AdotHam97) March 13, 2018Or like, maybe there's special rules? For special people?
Cmannn guys, the minister for magic would 100% be able to apparate into Hogwarts.#FantasticBeasts pic.twitter.com/5kH4LHdzbQ
— Ben (@JonsRhaegar) March 13, 2018Then again Dumbledore CAN Apparate too so maybe if you're a member of a very high governing body you have special permission ?
— Livael, вы здесь?! (@Livael23) March 13, 2018But the ultimate ruling is no, no one can, never ever, okay??
.@jk_rowling said in @pottermore that "the castle and grounds have always been protected with Anti-Apparition Charms" pic.twitter.com/bkP4ObEkLu
— The Rowling Library (@rowlinglibrary) March 13, 2018If only the director had checked in with the author of the series! But if there's nothing to be mad about, is it even fun for Harry Potter fans?
